A Mercedes SL AMG in the matte silver paint job. It looked awesome, and so out of place, surrounded by minivans, 10+ year old sedans and my POS Focus. That car is worth more, at least for now, then 90% of the homes within a 2 - 3 mile radius of the parking lot where it sat. I have no idea who owns it, but it didn't really surprise me, as my kids team was playing a team from the local Country Day school, where yearly tuition is about what the local State University charges. Unfortunately, my son's team got their ass handed to them. Oh well, they'll get next time.

It was driven, so right now its worth probably half the sticker price if the owner had to sell it. 50-60k maybe. Once theyre off the lot they take a big hit. Nice to see it out though, I dont see many SLs like that around here.

You're way south. These used are still going for well over $100k. My store just sold one a few weeks ago with nearly 10k miles for $130k. It wasn't even listed for sale for a day before someone called and bought it over the phone from out of state.

I've got a good customer with the same exact car. If you hadn't already said I would have asked what city you're in, but you're nowhere near me. Those are fun.

I'm going to pretend I'm 5 and stick my tongue out at you. It's been a very long week so far.

Side note, I have basically this same image on a t-shirt. Sarcasm is my first language, except apparently in text just before bedtime.

Haha, it's okay. I do take stabs at the value of Mercedes vehicles pretty often. The most recent cars are much better than previous ones, definitely, but a lot of the late 90's cars and early 2000 cars have virtually none of their original value left at the moment. Hopefully they'll come back up, but right now is the best time to buy one in the hopes that it does go back up.

At the price I paid for my SL600, I could buy 11 more and still not match the sticker price of a brand new one.

That's pretty accurate. The Chrysler era cars seem to be the ones that don't hold value as well. A lot of cars in that price range behave that way though. Oh well. It is what it is

Not that I have no faith in the new cars, but the R129 I have feels so much sturdier and safer to me than so many of the newer ones. I know that the SL class is the top of the line, but I don't know, it's just one of those "they don't make them like they used to" things to me. The newest ones are great, and the SLS, SL63, and even the AMG GT that's coming out looks like fantastic cars, but as awesome as I'm sure they are, I guess they just don't have the same appeal that the R129 has on me, which is purely subjective, I understand that.

They're really fast, of course, but they don't stand out the same way. Even today, an R129 stands out. A new SL might turn a few heads, but I guess to me, the SLS aside, it doesn't exude the same presence anymore.

It's just add you said, subjective. I would much rather have an R231 than an R129. But R230 comes after both of those. 80's boxiness just didn't do it for me. I've always preferred a more sleek look as long as it isn't bubbly. And when I see a 129 roll into the shop it does turn my head. Away. Time for a break! Kidding mostly, they're not terrible, but I would much rather work on a newer one. Don't get me wrong here, I love old cars but there's something about cars from the genesis of the computer era that really turns me off. Like they spent so much time engineering the electronics that they forgot to engineer in serviceability.

I was looking at some service details for the M120 engine, and I read one thread that gave some confidence about doing the work myself, but then I read a thread that made it sound like working on the car myself was the thing of nightmares. In the effort of saving money, I absolutely will try it myself, but Im sure it will end up being an exercise in caution the whole time.

That's fairly accurate really. The best advice I can give you is just don't expect everything to work like other cars. Find out how Mercedes intended it to be done and do it that way. Be cautious, but at the same time be confident when it's deserved. For example of doing it the right way: GLK headlamp bulbs have a metal retaining clip. Lots of cars have metal retaining clips. Most of them require you to push in the ends then squeeze to disengage and pivot the clip away from the bulb to release it. If you do that on a GLK you will drop the clip into the headlamp assembly and not be able to get it out without removing the whole thing. All you actually need to do is slide the whole clip upwards about a quarter inch to release the bulb. And forthe cautious confidence thing: 210's have the cabin filters behind the glove box. Remove the 4 screws that hold the glove box in place and slide it out. Well, it doesn't just slide out, it actually takes a pretty strong yank to get it to pop free. It honestly feels like it will break, but it won't as long as you've done everything correctly up to that point.
